Moreton Bay Report

febuary 3rd 2021

I thought i would update all re the hope bank beacon getting a weather station on .BOM are finalizing agreements with marine safety Queensland to install the gear on the hope bank beacon ,BOM equipment is ready to go so as soon as all agreements are reached Bom will be ready to go and Dr Andrew Johnson ceo BOM still believes mid to late march this is fantastic news and i for one am pretty excited.Dr Andrew also mentioned that the equipment that was on spitfire channel is now on NW10 beacon work was completed Feb 24 and should be available soon on the BOM website.again i want to thank Dr Andrew Johnson for all his effort i think this is great for the bay. so write to as many people as you can if you want to try and see something done sooner or later you find someone who understands and wants to help..

febuary 28th 2021

Cant believe its the last day of summer its funny it seems hotter this last week then any days we had during summer, the good news fishing has been very good with lots of our moreton bay treats in plentiful supply.

whiting are all thru the small boat channel and the size has changed to good 30 cm ones on the southern bank from the chain banks /small boat channel plenty also along the maroon edge all the way to the rous entrance and the maroon gutter has plentyas does the amity banks. the two yellows at the sandhills had plenty as well as did the blue hole.

school mackerel are now thruout the bay and you can see why when you look at youre sounder and see the ammount of bait thruout, been getting them from close in at green island and king east to the hope banks and the gutter before the chain banks all the way past the two greens at amity banks and the basin at peel island but more on the lazarette gutter side .

the squire and sweetlip are in good numbers managed plenty at peel

the tiger squid are now in plentyful supply all thru the banks from the chain bank weeds all thru the rous and amity banks only problem amity bank side the big horrible sea toads are smashing the squid jigs and i mean to pieces .i found red colours were working the best

so plenty for our dinner table.

Febuary 21st 2021

Great few days on the bay with the weather not the greatest but still plenty of fish around, the school mackerel big and small have moved thruout the bay again from close in wide of the hyubers to the trench at the start of hope banks the two greens at the western side of amity banks and plenty on the eastern side of the lazzaret at peel island.

the tiger squid are plentyful in the weed banks and plenty of small and large arrows at night in the light behind the boat and the good news plenty of whitebait as well.lightly flour and pan fry in a little olive oil one of the best tastes ever.

plenty of whiting and depending what size you want amity banks and the maroon gutter has plenty of 30cm ones and the chain banks and small boat channel have plenty of smaller fish they all taste the same to me.

plenty of 35 to 40 cm squire in the lazarette but plenty of sharks as well .

febuary 14th 2021

A couple of days was enough to get out for a fish and the day was made when a couple of mates joined up for the 3 species plentyful in the bay this time of year, school mackerel ,whiting large and normal size depending where you go and ofcourse tiger squid and at night arrow squid and even a couple of small cuttlefish starting to show up.

the schoolies are thruout the bay but are concetrating around peel island south east and the north of the island and a few big spotties lurking with them as well ,the whiting normal size are thick in the small boat channel on the southern side of the chain banks but the 30cm plus size are on the amity banks but it seems an hour after the start of the outgoing tide and in the sandy areas, and the tiger squid are now thruout the area as well ,so plenty for all to catch and take home a feed and the kids and (adults ) have lotsof fun squiding.weather looks a little ordinary for a week so maintance and a few more colour squid jigs are in order ,i found red working better then anything in the last week .

febuary 8th 2021

A few on and off days of high winds but the winds eased and the fishing was back on,tiger squid are plentyful a;; thru the bay i would say in any weed bank and clean water from the western side of both big islands all the banks in between and green island is also firing well more to the north of the island rather then the south, only problem on the week end was the damn sea toads smashing my expensive squid jigs, not happy at all i cant believe they actually bite thru the body, lots of arrows at night under the lights at the lazzaret and green island.

the school mackerel were in big numbers thruout but lots in the peel area in front and east of the lazzaret gutter and a few big spotties with them on the bottom the bonito are going wild all over the bay but the spoties north are in small numbers and not large schools at all but a good slug will get you a long tail tuna which are mixed in with the bonito.

squire and sweetlip are all biting well in the shallow reefs but a few bull sharks are taking plenty of hooks.

the whiting are plentiful at the chain banks but the big buggers were at the amity banks on the week end,so plenty of fish around a few days of wind and come friday it looks ok again.

australia day 26th january 2021

Happy australia day to all.

fishing has been fantastic after all the winds and storms and rain, anything you would wish for in the bay is there, the whiting are in the small boat channel entrance at the chain banks but more on the southern side on the shallower water and much better when there is good tide run, worms and squid strips are working well but i decided to try bacon rind for many years and finally did and it works a treat good back up to all other whiting baits.

school mackerel have come on with a bang in the rous, been there for a few weeks but the last week they have even been feeding on the surface thanks to the bonito balling up the bait there were plenty of boats catching them and it was fun to see couples on their jet skis catching plenty anthony and christina had lots of smiles on their faces.not huge fish but all just over 50 cm with a few 70 plus mixed in and plenty of big bull sharks following a couple of 10 ft so dont go for a swim where the bait is,i was very concerned as i was netting (butterfly net ) some bluebait froggies out of the balls of bait that were hiding next to the old boat did not want to fall in with the sharks swimming around, very yummy eating.

spotties are around but all i find is very small schools and the bait balls are also smallin the southern bay between st helena and spoiled grounds , lucinda bay area might be worth a look as there is tons of bait and lots of bonito.

some nie squire at green island and the lazzaret at peel and artificial reef is good on the quieter days but lots of boats in the last week or two but enough fish for a feed.

the tiger squid have come on mass especially the rous channel maroon banks and gutter and amity banks even chain banks on the southern weed banks have plenty not many at green island yet and the ones that are there are small.

plenty of whitebait on the western side of green island at night but you have to be patient as you wait for the pike and other to ball them up and plenty of arrow squid as well,so enjoy this great fishing weather.

16th january 2021

Great past week for the schoolies with them turning up in close and out from the hyubers light ,front of the leads at wellington point out to the start of the hope banks as well with plenty of good size fish, smith jigs and all the 3 inch spoons are working well as is the halco kimberly spoon.the spotties are in but hard to find they are not in the thousands as they should be so i dont know whats going on.

the whiting are thick from the start of the chain banks all the way thru the channel up to and in the rous channel and the good news the tiger squid are now in good numbers in the weedbanks but not many at all at green island yet.

7th january 2021

The school mackerel just keep on keeping on ,the whitebait has moved back closer in and looks like the schools of schoolies have followed, between the hyubers light to the trench before the hope banks has been a good spot for them as well as the area east from the wellington point leads in 25 to 35 ft depth a little closer with the full tide in the last week, plenty of mackerel as well in the rous channel at the entrance of the maroon gutter.

whiting fishing is going well with the southern side of the chain banks all the way thru to the rous especially on the maroon side of the channel.some very large fish around the last green in the rous before the dogleg.

the season for tiger squid has started very well and judging by the ammount of small ones around its going to be a bumper seson again the shallow grouds around the weedbanks is holding plenty and even some very large arrows .

as soon as the weather calms and we get a few glassy days it will be time to see whats happening with the spotties ,managed a couple the other day trolling for schoolies near the naval banks ,but saw no surface action at all but were full of whitebait same as the schoolies.

Some nice squire around the bay islands but most days the wind against the tide makes it hard to fish ,but we will get the right conditions sooner or later.

For anyone like me that loves baitfish this is the time to start looking for them at night behnd the boat ,plenty in horseshoe bay in the last couple of weeks,so yummy to eat.

*** REPORT SUPPLIED BY SPERO KARTANOS ***

30th december 2020

Month and year is ending but the fishing does not stop and as the weather and winds eased it was on for young and old, plenty of whiting for all ,on the southern side of the chain banks all the way thru to the rous channel and plenty of whiting at the sandhills as well ,and amity banks and the maroon hole should start very shortly.

the school mackerel have come back on with a bang from inclose king and green to the western side of the hope banks and shark spit also had plenty as did the area between the two yellows at the sandhills but the top spot in the last few days was the rous channel where there were lots of big fish a friend bagged out with very large fish at the start of the outgoing tide.managed a few spotties going out the other day south of hope banks but saw nothing on the surface after that i think they will be back up in the cleaner water towards the spoiled grounds north of harrys ..

also tiger squid have been very quiet but a few very large arrows in the small boat channel this week while catching whiting worth having a jig back of the boat.

hope you all have a happy and healthy and safe new year.

16th december 2020

Start of december started pretty good with the spotties (big females) arriving and 90cm plus fish has been the norm, lets hope the males all arrive end of fecember and stay in as in the past till easter, chrome slugs are the best for these fish anything around the 35 gram mark and no wire no need to spend big dollars basic ones around the 3 dollar mark work as good as anything and it does not hurt loosing a few, ones i made many years ago are still available at watertower bait and tackle,i put single hooks on make it a little less dangerous unhooking them but can can always change to trebles.

the school mackerel are on the north eastern side of the hope and also plenty at sharkspit lots of little ones and the dolphins sometimes are a pain .

whiting have been thick in the small boat channel and the sandhills and amity banks in the maroon hole .

still waiting for the tiger squid to arrive in big numbers but have not seen lots yet.

what a few days of weather the last week i have to say quite scarry at the marina with recorded gust of 60 to 70 knots i was sitting in the boat expecting the worst but survived the onslaught i have to say i think we dodged a bullet with it not turning into a full cyclone.

weather looking great this comming week so we will be out to catch a few just watch the debri ,there will be lots floating about.

23 rd november 2020

Beautiful out on the bay before the strong winds so it was time to go looking to see if the spoty mackerel were in yet as the water temperature 76 and the mutton birds have been for a week or so and sat was a dead calm day ,so we headed straight towards the sandhills and nothing till we reached the no fish zone and here they were really big females in schools of about 10 to 15 fish inside the zone i could not believe it so we left and did not see any more ,plenty of whiting at the sandhills in front of both hills and floating yellows and also in the blue hole and also plenty of school mackerel at sharkspit,on the way back still a couple of schools in the green zone but a few boats chasing them east of st helena but not taking slugs like normal you had to really coax them by casting plenty of times we picked up a 85 cm one on the spoon and another smaller one on a slug ,a few readers picked up a few chasing around them but they were diving down very quickly and not balling up the bait yet,but a great sign lets hope the males follow in in the thousands like they use to..so get a few chrome slugs ready and cast away.and plenty of squire and sweetlip at green island .

20th november 2020

Whiting fishing was very good today with plenty in the rous channel and small boat channel especially when the tide was infull strengh.but the best news today was confirmation from Dr Andrew Johnson ceo of BOM Australia that what i had suggested was going ahead and that is that the Hope bank Beacon was going to be a weather beacon giving us a true wind strengh in the middle of the bay,he also advised the spitfire channel beacon could not be fixed and the NW10 would be the new beacon ,i just want to say how gratefull i am to dr andrew for getting this organised ,thank you so much from myself and the whole boating freternity in moreton bay.

17th november 2020

Plenty of sandcrabs thruout the bay and the whiting are thick in the small boat channel, and the good news some nice big spotties are showing up around frazer island lets hope they are moving down towards us,so get your chrome slugs ready and i have been trying some new halco spoons on the school mackerel and they have been working very well worth having a couple in your tacklebox.

11th November 2020

we wll remember them..

Been a little while with the melb cup week and getting the old girls bottom scrubed and antifouled and general touch ups it was time to get back on the water, storms winds and rain turned the bay brown for a while and as usual the school mackerel have moved out to cleaner water the rous and rainbow has some fish and all the little deep holes in the rous even in fishermans gutter and i would be looking on the western side of moreton between shark spit and the sandhills and while we are doing that we can start looking for the spotties water temp is nearly there another couple of degrees around the 74 is ideal .

the whiting fishing is very good and lots of big fish close in got some beautiful fish at green this week not many but quality was good.

the squire /snapper are well and truly on the bite as are lots of cod this year seems they have increased in numbers around all the bay islands

flathead are beeing taken close inshore and lots of garfish(one of my favourite eating fish) wish i could butterfly them like mr wilki used to.

sandcrabs are all thru the bay i dont remmeber seeing that many pots in the bay so keep an eye out as some pots have very long floating ropes.

October 19 th 2020

The whiting are in good numbers and very good quality from the small boat channel maroon bank side all the way thru to the rous channel junction and fishermans gutter and across to the maroon hole, squid strips are prefered bait at the moment followed by blood worms and peeled prawns, with the bigger tides needed thumb size sinkers to get to the bottom if you were anchored up.

school mackerel went a little quiet close in as the water with the winds and big tides went very dirty but there were plenty in the rous and the deep gutters even in fishermans gutter, this week with the smaller tides we should get a few closer in,last year peel basin produced plenty but have not had a chance to get over there yet.

the sandcrab season has started with lots of crabs in the bay but we need to get the pots with brighter and bigger floats s many boaties are running them over.

the squire and sweetlip were in good supply and the cod were beeing caught all over the bay islands.

have started seeing lots of bait in the bay 20 to 30 ft down and the water temp is around the 72 degree mark 74 is normaly the temp the spotties need to come into the bay lets hope we have a good season and they stay in for a few months, chrome slugs are ready as are the spinning rods .

looks like some fine days comming up so we will out to see whats biting .and catch a feed for dinner ,and a lookout for the tiger squid to start showing up as the water clears and warms up.

october 11th 2020

Past week was not to bad wind wise with a couple of fishable days ,school mackerel still around and especially hour each way of the high or low tides ,the whiting are 30 cm plus in the rous/small boat passage 32 boats catching them in a concetrated area but plenty for a meal just by anchoring up squid strips caught more fish then worms which was quite odd .squire and sweetlip were in good supply at peel and green islands and a couple of nice snapper caught at mud as well .the sand crab season has started of with a bang with lots being caught.

lets hope the spotties come in this year as the water temp starts to warm up .

october 6th 2020

The long week end was not as nice wind wise as it was suppose to be with monday beeing the best day of all with dead calm conditions and thousands of boats out and the fishing was pretty good with plenty of school mackerel on the slack water times hour each way of the tides even with all the trafic the fish were there.and i have never seen so many boats catching a feed of whiting in the small boat channel thru to the rous ,pretty sure everyone got a feed,we decided to fish an old spot that an old friend mr beech use to fish in windy conditions the north western sandbank at green island in the 5 ft mark and it was so much fun catching really big whiting obviously not in the hundreds but 15 to 20 fish in a couple of hours was fun and a nice squire on a whiting rod was good to,weather looks amazing for the week so a little squire fishing will be the go in the shallow reefs.

october 2nd 2020

The fishing and the weather is very good at the moment and the long weekend looks ok for out on the bay the 20 knots forcast for the aternoon worry me .

so keep an eye out and maye anchor for the night in a nice out of the wind bay.

the big tides also my be a little damper for the big school mackerel but all you can do is troll a little and see what happens plenty about in the last week in close and out wide towards amity banks and down to ormiston.

the squire /snapper were on the bite all week around the shallow reefs but they were only comming on for an hour or so patience was the trick with some nice fish caught but the bull sharks were a problem on the eastern side of greenlost two nice fish to the buggers,i have to say dont mind dropping a big snapper but taken by a bull sharks annoys the ….out of me.

the whiting are thick in the small boat channel heading up to the rous and the sandhills amity banks and blue hole and fishermans gutter aint to bad either.so plenty of fish around to put a smile on the families faces.

september the 26th 2020

The big tides and the strong winds churned up the bay big time with the water looking like mud on the last of the outgoing tides so there was not much fun trolling for mackerel in the mornings but come high water and the water turning back to clean they were on the chew once more, one good thing with the outgoing tides in the morning some nice 55 to 60 cm squire close in at green mud and sthelena and along the drop off from the hyubers to ormiston and there were plrnty of schoolies chasing the baits on the way in so well worth a floating pilly at the back when fishing for squire.

september 20th 2020

The weather is great and the school mackerel are on the bite all thru the bay ,as long as you have a diving board and a 3 inch spoon out behind the boat your chances are pretty good getting a few on the troll, and if not just float around with a pilly and that should work as well.they are in the bay from the last leads at manly harbour out to king island the hyubers to green islan and all the way down to ormiston to the naval banks and back towards the amity banks so your chances are good in getting a couple for dinner, the bonus is seeing the humback mothers with their calves in the same area and that makes the day perfect.

september 15th 202

Some nice days on the bay with plenty of fish to be had,the school mackerel season just keeps on improving and the close in areas from the leads at manly to the king island beacon to the hyubers and green island is still producing lots of fish with some big ones mixed in the hreens at the eastern side of the naval banks have been holding some big fish as well and a trip down to ormiston and back close in and a little wider will get you a few as well, spoons and smith jigs have been doing the job ,i anchored up and berlied today as it was blowing a little and managed 3 nice fish so if you dont want to troll a few pillies out will also do the trick.

the squire are on the bite with some nice fish about and the whiting ar all thru the small boat passage thru to the rous.

Also plenty of bull sharks in the close in areas i was sick and tired of getting smashed trying to catch a few reef fish.

september 6th 2020

Great week on the bay with all the fish variety in the table, the whiting are in great numbers all thru the small boat passage into the rous amity banks fishermans gutter and blue hole and the sandhill and the good news is they are also beeing caught north of the leeds at manly boat harbour toward green and st helena.

school mackerel are in large numbers but need to put up with the thousands of undersize before baging some big ones but plenty about.

and the snapper re oppening is going very well with plenty of fish in the bay.

cuttle fish have slowed but still plenty of arrow squid in the deeper waters and some showing up in the weed banks as well..

some lovely photos of rowan catching biggest snapper of his life fishing with dad conrad

kelvin cosby with a nice fish near green island

and the mc master boys having a ball with whiting and school mackerel.

august 30th 2020

The westerly winds have stopped and we have had some really nice days on the bay and thank heavens a little warmer.

whiting are in all the places they are at this time of year small boat channel southern side of the chain banks and all the way to the rous channel at the junction with the rous and also on the maroon bank side, lots at the sandhills and the blue hole and the good news is they are in fairly good numbers north of the leads comming out of manly harbour on the shallows before the deep water to green island and st helena.

the school mackerel undersize have invaded the area between the leeds and king island to green and to the hyubers 40 undersize to one keeper.i have never seen so many babys this close in.but the bigger fish are on the two greens north east of the naval banks and the rous channel as well.

the cuttlefish are starting to slow but the arrows are still in good supply and even in the weedbanaks where the whiting are.

the start of the squire season has not seen too many big fish but plenty of 35 to 55 cm marks harrys was good this week end as was thelazaret and green island,…

august 18th 2020

The whales are in the bay and the westerly winds have brought the school mackerel in massive numbers to the western side of the bay as in previous years ,it was great to hear and see some great videos of the mum and calves in the bay and lets hope more and more come into the southern bay,and at the same tome the school mackerel are on the bite as well, the only problem you need to find the big ones as there are thousands of fish in the 40 to 45 cm range but plenty of big buffers as well.

Weather gods have been kind overall with many glassy conditions days out on the bay ,and the school mackerel have taken resindency in the small boat channel on the maroon side ,the problem is 30 small ones around 45 cm to ine big one but lots of fun to be had and plenty of whiting in the same area and a few tiger squid showing up as well.

The whiting are now thruout the small boat channel as normal this time of year from the start of the chain banks all the way to fishermans gutter and the maroon gutter and plenty in the blue hole and infront of the small sandhill.

The arrows and cuttlefish are still around in good numbers in the deeper areas west of the islands and even in the weed banks.

august 5th 2020

The weather i think is why we live in qld especially in winter,a little breezy and cold in the mornings followed by dead calm and warm conditions and i am finding i am going out later and later to miss the cold.10 more days till the snapper season re opens and if you are like me i have been saving lots of whiting frames .

the whiting have now moved all the way from the fishermans gutter and maroon gutter all the way west to the chain banks and plenty of them as well at the sandhills and some monster ones in the edges of the blue hole , and the school mackerel have followed yesterday they were so thick i put the boat to do circles at 4 knots and caught 40 plus in a short time only problem was only 3 were keepers the rest were all around the 40 cm mark ,so looking forward to later in the month and september i fee a really big month on the cards,as last year same time the whales came in the bay.

a few bigger fish were caught earlier on floating pillies so while catching whiting a goos idea tohave back of boat.

the cuttlefish and arrow squid have invaded the bay caught some even in the weed shallow banks on the southern side of the chain banks.

so beautiful weather and plenty of fish and octopods ..a tip i have been finding the yamashita jigs 3.5 in the browns and silvers working the best at the momment,,

there are also plenty of crabs in the bay so forget the no crabs in a month without an R in it..

july 22nd 2020

Cold in the morning but glassy and warm days with fishing as good as it gets.

whiting are plentiful in the blue hole and the sandhills and the small boat passage and rous have plenty as well.

school mackerel in the rainbow channel and the rous better at low tide with pillies or spoons on diving boards

arrow squid and cuttlefish are in good supply in the bay in the 25 to 30 ft depth from ormiston to st helena.

july13th 2020

The weater over the last few weeks has been fantastic with dead calm days and really good fishing, and with the snapper/squire fishing closing in the next couple of days i think most went out and caught some looking at the photos i have been sent,

the whiting are getting bigger in the bay and they finally came back in the small boat channel ,lots at the sandhills and the blue hole (in the shallows around the hole) and maroon gutter and amity banks has some giant ones as well.

the school mackerel have moved into there old stompimg ground in the rainbow channel with some 80cm ones smashing the spoons and for the relaxed fisherman a floating pilly while drifting is fun as well.

the arrow squid and cuttlefish are in good supply from east of ormiston all the way to st helena 23 to 35 ft mark just drifting with a ball sinker above the jig,and i am finding the cheap razorback jigs working really well.

the snapper closure starts on the 15th july to the 15th of august .

photos are graham and grandson max of some really good snapper west of tangalooma and matt little and his brother with 3 nice fish from mt cotton reach in the rous.

June26 2020

If you like arrow squid or cuttlefish its probably one of the best seasons in a long time ,from east of ormiston all the way to st helena 23 to 35 ft depth better with a nice in the tide to drift a little faster and jigs just of the bottom ,big whiting in the maroon gutter and they are showing up as well at the juntion of the rous and the small ship channel on the maroon side .

June22nd 2020

The weather has been hit and miss with some sunny warm days and glassy conditions snapper are beeing caught everywhere from the shallow reefs at green and mud islands and harrys is fishing very well even with 25 to 40 boats at any one time and the spoiled ground little reef is also doing well ,the school mackerel are all over with east of hyubers light towards the hope banks and the two greens east of the naval banks ,whiting are are in the usual winter spots of maroon banks and rous channel and the sandhills and blue hole ,and my favourite this time of year the arrow squid and cuttlefish in the 25 to 35 ft marks east from ormiston to st helena ,a bit of chilly weather comming up so might need to go out when the sun is high in the sky.

june 12 th 2020

If you are like me and love catching squid and cuttlefish then this is the time of year that the bay is full of them ,catching them is a little different then the shallow weed banks for tiger squid which are still around,so anywhere from wellington point to st helena east in 23 to 35 ft depth drifting with a ball sinker on top of the jig just of the bottom, all colours are working well but the yamashita pilchard and silver and grey and even the grey with green eye are fantastic on cloudy days ,my other favourite are the daiwa emeraldas all the orange red pink prawn colours and i only use 3.5 in the bay.

so get out there and get a few they taste great ..enjoy.

june 2nd 2020

What a great few days out on the bay even with the thousands of boats out on the week end there were plenty of fish to get you home with a nice feed.the school mackerel are moving all over as some netting close in has been going on(have no problem with that at all) but still plenty around for us managed a few good ones going out east of hyubers beacon and then over at the two greens east of naval banks but there were thousands of them opposite the lazaret gutter only problem was one keeper to 20 undersize, all about 35 to 45 so a good few months ahead.

the whiting are just starting to move back into the rous and the tiger squid are with them but the cuttlefish and arrow squid are in good numbers in the 25 to 30 ft mark wide of ormiston to the east side of st helena but not in the 40 ft plus depths.

the squire and sweetlip were ok at peel overt the week end but nothing big all around the 38 to 40 cm mark great for eating.

May 24th 2020

The cold winds arrived but we managed a few nice days out and the fishing is very good ,the schoolie season should get better in winter but its been fantastic in summer these days for many years especially with the absence of the spotties coming in the bay another horrible spotty season, funny how there are few around at the moment must have got lost, the other good news, there have been a good number of broad mackerel started to be caught a few weeks ago at the blue hole and last week in the Rous Channel on baits, so it should not be long when we can start catching them around the Peel Island to Amity Banks.

It’s getting better and better for the cuttlefish and arrow squid in the 30 ft mark off Wellington Point and Green Island and the tigers are still all over the bay in the weed banks, the whiting are in good numbers in the Blue Hole and on the front of the small Sandhill and there are some nice big ones in the Maroom Gutter all the way to the Hole and Amity Banks, but definitely need a good run in the tide to be on the bite. Looks like this week should be a little easier to fish if someone in the forcasting get it right.

may 8th 2020

great couple of days on the bay lots of mackerel from king to just before the deep water at hope banks, east of st helena spoiled grounds north east of harrys and plenty along the deeper water of amity banks heading towards peel island and some of the schoolies are very large.

squid and whiting in the marrom gutter and amity banks but there needs to be a good run in the tide my friend the whiting master had a great day..

may 4th 2020

The weather has finally cooled down but the fishing is as good as ever.plenty of whiting in the maroom gutter all the way to maroom hole and on the eastern amity banks as well just remmember they love a good run in the tide .and plenty at the sandhills and the blue hole and have a squid jig out in all those areas as the tiger squid are fighting to get to the jigs ,they are even in the dozens on the forshores and marinas ,so if you are land based a nights fishing of any of the jettys should get you a squid or two.

the school mackerel are now spread thruout the bay from close in between king and green islands to the front of the hyubers and along the deeper water to ormiston and all the way to hope banks and the drop off at amity banks to peel island some nice big spotties hanging deep as well ,the broad mackerel should not be far away.

squire and snapper sweetlip cod and a few jew fish around green and the passage to king island and live herrings are doing the trick ,and in the same area lots of big tailor are hanging around as well.

by all reports plenty of sandcrabs in the bay and plenty of big muddies in the marina at the momment.

cuttlefish and arrow squid are showing up in the deeper water so a sinker above the jig and bouncing it of the bottom should catch you a couple ,remmember the razorback squid jigs work really well for cuttlefish.

the bonito and long tail tuna are smashing whitebait all over the bay and a chrome slug into the feeding packs should produce a nice feed.

and i got sent one of the best shots of young mitch with his squid .

april 21st 2020

Easter came and went unless of course you are orthodox and then it was on last weekend.

but lets get back to fishing with the clear water and smaller tides the water went crystal clear close in and the squid and school mackerel came out to play and they were thick green island tiger were fighting to get on the jigs and the schoolies grew in size to some around the 70 to 75 but the last few days with the big tides and a bit of a blow on sunday arvo the clarity has gone and the squid have slowed up as have the mackerel and the small sharks are in the thousands.

the cuttlefish have started to show up in the deeper water of the islands and a jig on the bottom with a running sinker above will get you a feed 25 to 32 ft depth.and worth having a squire /snapper fish plenty around the shallow reefs at green and peel.

had some fun last week with a father and son fishing for schoolies between green and king island when they hooked up to what they thought was a shark ,it was not it was a cobia around the 35 kilo mark and after fighting it for half an hour they realized no gaff o with some precision driving with the electric motor from ben keen and son joe they brought the fish around to the back of my boat for me to gaff which i did and ben got the other gaff and we got it into his boat it was amazing and it was 139 cm long .i am sure none of us will forget the day.

and also a great photo from rchie and cooper after a day squid fishing.look at the smiles .

April 8th 2020

Its easter time and i have to say it feels so strange especially when this time of year there would be thousands of boats with families out fishing and having a good time.

well you can go get a fresh fish so looking at the weather conditions does not look to great but if you can manage a day the whiting are at the sand hills ,amity banks in the shallows and the same in the maroom gutter heading towards the maroom hole on the shallows and in both areas the tiger squid are in big numbers and very aggressive and closer in their numbers are getting better at green island ,deeper out the cuttlefish and arrow squid are starting to come on.

school mackerel are in close, from the last leads at manly to green and king island and east of the hope banks towards the chain banks but the weed is making hard to troll.

the crabs seemed to be everywhere close in and also in the deep water so should not be hard to get a feed.

i was lucky to be taken out to be shown the frenzy of net casting for prawns which are thick at the moment by a good friend seb and it was fun to watch and see how it is done ,i cant throw a net to save my life but seb managed plenty and watching the hundreds of boats around us plenty were beeing caught.

so i hope everyone has a good and safe easter if you are going out ..

April 2nd 2020

well by now everyone has read the you can go fishing and you cant go fishing and now you can go fishing to catch something to eat so i did.thats the last comment on the subject.

the fishing has been fantastic tiger squid attacking all colour jigs big school mackerel in close from the last leads at manly harbour to green and across to king island and big whiting at the maroon channel and amity banks. be careful stay safe and sane and lets all hope some normality sooner rather then later.

march 23rd 2020

Wow what weather the last few days ,and there were so many boats in the overnight spots it looked like the boatshow was on,but the fishing depending what you were trying to catch was fantastic even with all the thousands of boats and jet skis going all over the place.

Large whiting and squid were in plentiful supply in the maroon channel fishermans gutter and amity banks if you did not get inked you were lucky and the whiting were in the 32 cm range big whiting for the bay, prawns and crabs are also in plentiful numbers with most boats bagging out on both, with the prawning sounds like dodgem cars trying to throw the net out,but sandcrabs are all over and there are lots of muddies around the marinas and creeks.

Lots of bonito and fat boy tuna in the northern bay and some nice snapper and squire in the shallows reefs around the bay island and a few schoolies around wide of the hyubers light.so plenty out there even on the busiest day on the water.

–great day today and looks like great weather till next week ,the bay is the place to get away from all the doom and gloom catch a few fish have a swim and sun in my oppinion is a great remedy.extra large whiting in the rous channel and fishermans gutter and the tiger squid are thick matter of drifting over the weed beds, seen plenty get caught today ,a few reef fish and a few school mackerel around and on harrys artificial reef and plenty of small school mackerel in close this morning as well with plenty of bonito smashing the surface eating an unbelievable ammount of razor pillies.

march 5th 2020

Some nice days on the water and the fishing has been very good ,plenty of big schoolies have shown up again,i dont know where all the little ones have gone ,and the spotty season in the bay looks like a fizzer unless something amazing happens but i would not be holding my breath, the whiting have moved further east into the small boat channel and the rous and the quality is really good and the squid are plentyful amity wall has plenty as does the weed banks in the small boat channel and the rous,a few cuttlefish and arrow squid east of green have started as well.plenty of squire at the spoiled ground north of harrys with plenty of tuna in the same area ,crabs and prawns are going of big time with plenty beeing caught so no excuse not to get out and get a feed of some fresh seafood. and good fun seeing the kids having fun catching fish and crabs.archie and cooper philp ..cant beat the smiles.

febuary 26 th 2020

Well we have had everything downpours over 300 ml at manly and we had 73 knot plus winds corona virus spreading all over the world all we need now is the locusts, should not joke i saw a news buletin where they actually had them down south.

the weather finally cleared for a few days the water a;so has cleared and the whiting are on the bite and very good quality fish and the tiger squid are back on as well ,the schoolies were all small today ,the crabs are running hot in the bay with 25 to 30s beeing caught everyday and close in which helps ,going for a look to see if the spotties are still around if i can get a glass out day ,at least we have fresh squid and whiting for dinner.

febuary 16th 2020

Hard to believe the colour of the water at the momment even horshoebay was chocolate brown as was the whole of peel island and the water from the marina out was terrible ,but i have to say apart from the squid comming out to play the whiting quality and numbers is fantastic as are the school mackerel and the sweetlip seem to have taken over all the islands not many snapper squire but lots and lots of sweetlip.

the whiting were again on the shallow bank south east of chain banks and also at the legal side of amity banks and sandhills had plenty as well ,the school mackerel were on the eastern side of the hope banks in the deep water going east towards the whiting banks lots of small one all over the bay even in the chocolate water, spotties seemed to have gone fron close in and was told a few schools with the acres of tuna west of tangalooma and the sandhills but did not hear of any beeing caught,i think the water will cler pretty quickly if no more rain arrives so we can see if the spotties are still around.

febuary 11th 2020

Well we had to wait for a week with lots of rain and thunderstorms but the last few morning were fantastic as long as you got back in before the rain and thunder, the water colour up to the western side of green is chocolate in colour but to my suprise it is very clear as you go past green island, plenty of school mackerel on the way to the whiting grounds but lots of small ones as well and one gave me something to remmeber him by as i was tryng so hard to release without hurting him, these things happen but gee there was lots of blood on the back of the boat.the whiting are in plentiful numbers but the water was to murky for squid and some nice sweetlip and squire caught at green island and victoria point and was shown a nice picture of a nice size snapper from mud island ,i thought there might be lots of catfish ,so might have to go for a reef fish in the next couple of days depending how the finger holds up..

february 3rd 2020

Some really good days out on the water ,the best news the spottys have come into the bay not in the millions but fish were caught from the hope banks (where there were plenty of schoolies as well) all the way to mud island what we have called the paddock over the years ,problem beeing they were not staying up long but long enough for the faster boats to get a couple.

squid are thick in the small boat channel and the rouse in the deeper weed banks and the whiting were plentyful as well.

had a day to remmeber yesterday while trolling forspottys on the eastern side of st helena slowing down to release a baby mackerel the the line when off like a rocket and in the distance saw a huge fish jump out ,thinking it was a big spaniard kept trying to get this fish closer and i realized after a few more jumps it was one of the biggest queen fish i have ever seen, martha did a great job slowing and turning the old cruiser to get this fish in close we got our fish and our friends and neighbors all had fresh fish meals last night, amazing what our bay has swimming in it just got be lucky to be in the right spot at the right time.

january 27th 2020

the weather was not the best with the winds from the north but we went looking some friends allot further then me and not a spotty in site.the good news was the schoolies are back on on the eastern side of the hope banks towards the green marker at the start of the chain banks, and the most interesting thing today i caught two of the smallest spotties on the spoons about 6 to 7 inches i really dont know what they are doing in the bay.i am really concerned if we dont see the big ones soon it could be another year like 2019,(cant blame the ring netters now).

the good news was the whiting are thick on the southern side of the chain banks and the tiger squid have invaded the bay plenty in the small boat channel in the deeper weed beds but rainbow channel amity and days gutter and the sandhills they are in plague proportions.

the best for me was the ammount of whitebait in the bay and was lucky last night to see this massive baitball behind the boat 2 to 3 scoops of the old butterfly net and we had a bucket of these great tasting little fish.

weather looks a little settled but we really need some southerlies lets hope we see some spotty mackerel soon.

january 24 th 2020
The weather gods have not been too kind and with all the rains the water colour close in was horrible,a few boats got out and the best was the whiting and crabs been caught ,plenty of big whiting over at amity banks and the maroon channel and plenty of whiting also in the small boat channel of the chain banks, looking forward to the week ahead as i will be looking for the spotty mackerel if they are going to come in i think this is the week ,and the quicker the water clears the better,i would be looking on the s=western side of moreton and the shipping channels closer to moreton as i think the water there will be the cleanest.so lets hope the weather prediction for next week are correct, the long weekend weather looks funny to me reading how its a great boating week end but i see 20 knot winds not great for me and the chances of storms ,keep an eye daily as this time of year weather is very tricky ,stay safe good fishing and have a great australia day.

january 5th 2020

Well the new year has come and the good fishing in the bay continues, plenty of all our favourites depending what you wanted to target.,whiting continue to be in good numbers in the small boat channel, rous channel maroon hole and passage and amity banks has some monster whiting, especially with the incomming tide.

The school mackerel were a little quieter but still managed a couple every trip especially east of the hope banks towards the start of the chain bank green marker in 20 to 25 ft depth on the troll.

Good snapper were caught at mud island and peel island and the sweetlip have come on in big numbers in the shallower water at green, sqire fishing was good there also till the horrible cat fish turned up the last few days.

Tiger squid season has started with a bang at the weed banks in the rous and small boat channel ,amity banks sandhills and small arrows at night at peel island.

The treat for me this week was staying out a few night the bluebait (Small frogmouths) at peel and the whitebait at green island schooled up in the light behind the boat and it was so much fun netting and eating them.

So the only thing we are waiting for now is the spotty mackerel to come in the bay, there is so much bait in the bay i would think they have to come in ,even the mutton birds are sitting waiting for them as well .hopefully next report has good news .

end of december 2019

Had a few really good days out the weather is very hit and miss ,the easterlies are stoppingand starting oneminute20 knots next hour 8 knots ,on the western side of the islands it was like glass and we went hiding at amity banks and glad we did the whiting were the best i have seen for years 30 cm to 35cm and plenty of them around in3 to 5 ft depth incomming tide and lots of small tiger squid as well,a few nice schoolies in the trench in front of the chain banks on the incomming as well and plenty of big tiger squid in the weed deeper holes in the small boat passage, did not get a chance to fish for snapper as the winds were against the tides plenty of small fish in the lazaret hiding from the winds.

to all our readers may you all have a happy and healthy new year and lets hope the spotties come in in the next few weeks and the fishing is as good in2020 as it was in 2019.

december 20th 2019

great few days on the bay the weather was good and the fishing fantastic, whiting are in huge numbers on the bank on the southern side of the chain banks ,the school mackerel have come on with a bank on the eastern side of the hope banks towards the chain bank green marker the tiger squid are jumping on top of each other to get to the squid jigs in the small boat channel in the deeper hole where the weed is and the snapper are hitting the old whole whiting like there is no tommorow at green island mixed in with plenty of sweetlip if you fish the shallower waters,i have found it amazing what you find in snapper stomachs and this week was a first a small whole puffer fish ,now thats a bait that nothing else would eat, maybe we could ask our local bait shops for a bag of puffer fish.

have fun on the water and stay safe and hope you all have a merry xmas.

december 18 2019

weather is looking pretty good if all the forcasts are anywhere near correct ,lets hope they are and everyone catches a few fish over the xmas and new year.

just wanted to wish all the readers a merry xmas and a happy and healthy new year with plenty of fishing fun,and for all the kind emails over the year, and be careful out on the water with all the extra traffic and the few folk that seem to find their way out on the water to make others uncomfortable.watch the weather and the stingers and stonefish this time of year and stay safe. will be out on the water and will be able to report what’s beeing caught over the break.

december 12 th 2019

Getting close to xmas and the whiting are in good numbers south of the chain banks and all the way into the rous channel on the maroon bank side ,and worth floating a pilly as there are some nice schoolies chasing the whiting as they come up ,if you can have a squid jig as well as the tiger squid are starting to show up.

plenty of whiting also at the sandhills and the blue hole if you want to travel a little further, and some big summer whiting on the sandbank on the north western side of green island ,and the sandcrabs are also around in big numbers with a few mud crabs as well.

school mackerel have gone quite with the water beeing very dirty at the momment close in so wider out is where there have been a few around the shipping channels sharkspit and in front of the sandhills.

plenty of good squire and snapper at the moment at green ,mud and the eastern side of st helena a good run in the tide a little burly and some fresh small whiting or whiting heads should get you a feed.

lets hope the spottys turn up soon water temperature is perfect at the momment blubbers are in plenty of bait down deep, just waiting to see the mutton birds and the big ugly brown jelly fish and it will time to start looking, chrome slugs are ready hopefully just a matter of time.

december 4th 2019

Water at the momment is a terrible color and the school mackerel are hit and miss and the big tides did not help last week ,ad a chance to have a snapper fish close in at green island and even with all the sharks and catfish around managed a couple of really nice fish, the whiting are thick at the chain banks and the bank south with plenty of good quality fish ,i am finding the worms are working better then anything else at the momment.

on the school mackerel i am finding the chrome and white smith jigs working as well as the spoons, and when you hook them with the double hooks on the smith jigs you dont lose many fish at all.watertower has got plenty of stock .

i dont like these awful hot conditions and dry weather the water temperature is getting very high and i am concerned about having another shitty spotty mackerel season ,all we can do is have the chrome slugs ready and hope they show up.

november 26 /11/2019

The weather has been hit and miss and some of the wind predictions are 10 knots of the mark which makes a big difference but all we can do is go out if you are comfortable .the fishing has been pretty good when we got out there with plenty of whiting in the chain banks and rous channel and plenty at the sandhills as well ,the schoolies at the momment are a hit and miss with winds and big tides not helping but they are all there just need to be out when they are on the bite,i am finding the chrome smith jigs at the momment and the white ones working a little better then the spoons ,the water temp has reached the perfect temp for the spotties to enter the bay lets hope we have a good season not like last year all is looking good plenty of bait , all we need to see are the mutton birds and the horrible big brown jellys and we should be good,so get the chrome slugs and spoons ready.

snapper and squire fishing has also been very good with plenty in the bay green island and northern side of peel and mt cotton reach have been producing plenty.

Crabbing has also been very good with plenty of sandies and a few big muddies around so all in all fishing is great just need to be out on the good days.

Report 1/11/19

report 11/11/2019

The weather let us get out for a couple of days not great and the smoke was terrible woke up at peel and could not see stradbroke or anything else on the way for a fish could not see green island or the mainland prety weird and talk about a blood moon and blood sun ..but the fishing was great schoolies back in close and the whiting are thick sout of the chain banks and the snapper session today was the best for a long time 7 big buggers had to catch and release but lots of fun at green island .really like the outgoing tide with a good run in the tide and this was at 9.30 am my favourite time to fish as you get older.looks like a few blowing days and lots of smoke so we will need to waite for a few days to get out there again.green island was 21 ft depth whole small whiting on 5.o red snapper hook thru the nose.. and the schoollies all hit the chrome smith jigs instead of the spoons the last couple of days.

November is upon us and the fishing is good when the winds abate and you can get out for a fish, the whiting have come on in leaps and bounds ,squid and blood worms are working really well but i started using frozen pippies wich i salt to harden the flesh and they are working really well and a little cheaper as well, the snapper season is getting better every week a good friend fishes the mt cotton reach and he has been getting plenty of big buggers with small whiting or whiting heads the best bait, the school mackerel have gone very quiet close in but shoewed up at the measured mile beacon and thruout the shipping channels and a few caught last week at the sharkspit area.

the water temp has risen and i am hoping it does not get too hot for the spotties to come in this year ,we can only hope,so get the chrome slugs ready and hope.

Report 22/10/19

October started with a bang lots of fish and the weather played its part ,whiting in the bay from the rous and small boat channel at the chain banks the sandhills at moreton island and the blue hole all were holding plenty of fish and quality.
The school mackerel season just keeps on going ,the rain and storms put a damper on the fish close in but if you ventured out to the cleaner water at the shipping channels and rous channel there were plenty of fish to be caught.
The snapper /squire season has also been fantastic with plenty of fish been caught all the usual shallow reefs had plenty of fish ,a friend who fishes the mt cotton reach has been cleaning up on really nice fish, but the best story was whiting masters boy holidaying at tangalooma were out with the dingy catching some small squire and bream at the wrecks and on the way back to the beach saw splashing on top of the water ,went over to see and there was a snapper splashing on the surface so they netted it around the 3 kilo mark ,they were thrilled.
Water is warming up nicely just hoping it does not get to the boiling point as november approaches and the spotty mackerel decide not to come in the bay again, all we can do is get the chrome slugs ready and wait.
couple of nice photos sent .
young noah with nice school mackerel
3 nice snapper from mt cotton reach from seb
and the snapper netted on the surface

Update 15/9/19

The weather gods were good to us and it was great to see so many of our readers out there catching the schoolies which are not only plentiful but very large and so so close to home and a pleasure to see all the young ones out there catching a few with dads and mums .as mentioned the smith jigs are working as well as the spoons but i think a little better but with that many fish around i think you can catch a feed using whatever ,so people using slugs catching them just dropping and winding up as quick as they could others floating pillies so enjoy them while they are close in we managed plenty on the way to peel for the week end, and there were some nice ones at peel opposite the lazaret as well but plenty of small ones.
some nice squire/snapper on the northern side of peel especially when you catch them on grinner bodies i knew they were good for something…and plenty of whiting (big buggers) in the small boat passage and the entrance of the rous channel especially on the northern side at the red and green markers,,so no excuse for not getting a feed and sunday the whales were east of green island and harries artificial reef just to make the day extra special.

Update 12/9/19

The winds eased and the fish are out there waiting for us and they are close in thats the schoolies ,they were so close in today did not even go past the hyubers light .pretty sure the are all along the front as well but the bigger fish were between hyubers and green island,i am finding the chrome and white and pink smith jigs are picking up the bigger fish ,i tried one last week and it just caught the bigger fish and today the chrome outdid the pink and white so its worth trolling one one one rod.
good snapper /squire at green island and the rous channel mt cotton reach is fishing very well.
so the weather looks like its on the improve the cuttlefish and arrow squid have slowed right down but the tigers are not far away i would think.

Report 7/9/19

With spring arriving the temperature thank heavens is up a few degrees and the fishing is very good at the moment, the winds have eased (except these last few days)and we have had some glorious days on the bay.

Spent a few days out on the bay and there were plenty of school mackerel around ,from the area between green island to the hyubers to ormiston and managed a few nice ones at the amity banks side of the area in front of the lazaret gutter, with lots of small ones in abundance i decided to try the white pink and chrome smith jigs and they worked a treat catching many more bigger fish so worth putting one spoon and one smith jig on when trolling.

There have also been plenty of squire in the shallow reefs around the islands and some very big snapper in the mt cotton reach in the rous channel.

The diver whiting are now thick in all the areas from the start of the chain banks all the way through the rous channel, with some really big fish. The tiger squid are starting to show up again, but the arrows and cuttlefish are slowing a little as you would expect with the warmer weather.

Clean up time while the winds are howling and reading the new fishing rules ,the way i see it not many changes affecting us in the bay apart from the 4 week closure of the snapper/squire fishing from the 15 july to 15 august and to be kept whole when on the boat.,mud crab possession of 7 down from 10 and sand crabs from unlimited to 20.and label on the pots of surname and full address.

It does not sound so bad to me and all pro fishermen will be sent through changes from fisheries direct to them, speaking of pro fisherman please dont get angry at the pro netting shark and school mackerel in the bay they have been doing this for years and its their livelyhood and it has not made a difference in the amount of schoolies in the bay in my opinion ,we are catching more today then all the years past.

Sep 16, 2019 2:42 pm

It was great to get so much feedback from many of our readers catching plenty of school mackerel over the week end ,got sent some great shots of smiling faces with fish onboard the boats ,hopefully the next generation of young one fish more and play less computer games..thought i would share. my photo of ward and his daughter amy not the best but they were very happy and angus mcmaster took out his son johnny and his friend henry smith and by the smiles had a great day..
Went out today and still plenty around and the good news is the tiger squid are starting to show up at green island.and the chrome smiths still working great .

Sep 19, 2019 6:23 pm

Nice day out in the bay the mackerel were not as thick close in but they are a little further out and a little south in 28 to 35 ft depth and all big fish but the dolphins have worked out when one is hooked .and the whiting were not in large numbers but quality was very good in the small boat channel, lets hope the week end weather is good for everyone to get out there and catch a few of these XL schoolies.
have had a few emails re not catching any while others are,and there are a couple of things to remmember,
!.halco or makka spoons 3 inch
2.smith jigs chrome ,white or pink 3 inch
3.delta boards ,yamashita boards or orange trolling boards the best
and NO WIRE to the lure it just does not work in the bay,and the last thing when hooked drop the revs and leave the boat in gear you will not loose as many fish.
and this time of the year with the blubber big jellies in the water it looks like a hit and you think you are missing bites its the diving board hitting the blubbers..
hope everyone has a great week end fishing.
my mate had a ball today after sleeping in but the fish did not care..great quality schoolies

Sep 21, 2019 5:48 pm

Schoolies Have dispersed from close in .still some in close but they are in a line east of the hyubers and south in the area before the deeper trenches.also along the amity banks at the two greens going towards peel .also plenty of a small ones at peel mixed with a few XL ones
.anchored up wide of the hyubers sat afternoon hour before high tide and picked up a few on pillies and plenty came up behind boat.so still around just have to find them.

Sep 25, 2019 3:21 pm

mackerel still around in good numbers a few still in close mixed with some small ones but big buggers out a little wider and further south trolling or floating pillies .. and the whiting are in big numbers at the small boat channel and the entrance to the rous.

Report 21/7/19

Mid winter and the weather has settled and the fish are on the bite in the bay. A friend and follower of of the fishing monthly reports Angus mc master sent me a lovely email to say thank you for letting him know where the whiting have been. Judging by the boys faces, George livingstone and johnny mc master, they had some fun with big whiting. This is what puts a smile on my face — kids catching fish.

The snapper have been on the bite throughout the bay, and judging by many photos sent through and by the luck i had this past weekend, many anglers had a few nice fish to take home. I personally had one of the best two morning sessions i have had in a long while. Not giant fish but 40 cm to 58 cm was the norm. The bite was so good i ended up releasing 4 fish well over the 45 cm mark, and the good thing was they came on the bite at peel at 8.30 and 9 am — a lovely time rather then pre dawn and dusk when it has been freezing. Lots of fun i have to say.

The school mackerel were very quiet. I managed 3, two under size, and i don’t really know why. Pretty sure they will be back on very soon.

The whiting in the rous and small boat channel was hit and miss, and amity banks were very slow but the fish were very large, 28 to 32 cm so no complaints. Where they have been in good numbers are the sand hills and the blue hole, with many being caught.

The little cuttlefish and arrows are still on the bottom east of green and wello point, so it’s worth a jig on the bottom. I have found the razorbacks jigs, especially the blue color, are working really well as the cuttlefish are getting jagged on the back prongs as they grab the jig in the middle.

Jul 24, 2019 5:35 pm

Some good days on the bay and the weather and winds are letting us get out there .the whiting are in good numbers in the blue hole ,but if you dont want to go that far they are in the small boat channel and the rous is the go, but you need to work a little to find them we managed 40 plus today all big fish but had to work a little but the size makes up for the quantity.
school mackerel are hard to find at the momment a few tailor on the spoons .but the cuttlefish and arrow squid are in good numbers in the deeper water of green island.

Jul 28, 2019 5:38 pm

The last 3 days on the bay were exceptional weather wise and fishing wise depending on what you targeted, decided on squire/snapper and arrows and cuttlefish as the school mackerel have gone quiet till the next cold snap i hope and we have plenty of bonito cured in salt and olive oil ,and the whiting are hit and miss but of really good quality if you put the time and effort in,seems the blue hole is fishing better then anywhere else for good size whiting.
friday afternoon produced one of the best sessions i have had at green for a while not only getting the bag limit but catching and releasing as well in a two hour period, was not my favourite tide incomming but sometimes if the wind light north easterly in the same direction as the tide is worth a go for me ,and all i had was extra large whiting heads but that did not make a difference they smashed them,so dont be scared to use extra large bait the snapper /squire they take anything one had whole squid and whole whiting in its stomach.
The cuttlefish and arrow squid have been so much fun to catch and of course they are great to eat and its been a very good season for them some of the cuttlefish are quiet large as are the very long arrows,i have to say its been so much fun fishing for these octopods.
A little advise fishing at green island if you are after the bigger fish fish in the deeper water and not on the actual reef ,especially with baits you will loose lots of gear and you will probably loose a good fish on the coral, flicking plastics at least you can keep of the bottom .i find best results along the whole eastern side is 18 to 20 ft depth and using burly helps ,interesting this past week end were the spearfisherman at green island ,a little of putting when close to boat fishing, it scares me knowing some of our tiger and bull sharks in the bay.

Aug 05, 2019 2:17 pm

What a few great few days weather was great and the fishing was just as good ,plenty of whiting in the small boat channel of the chain banks some huge whiting at the amity bnks but not in great numbers but 30 cm plus.
The school mackerel that have been very quiet in the last few weeks must have been having babies as there were hundreds in the lazaret basin the last 3 days only problem 99% of them were under size (in a few weeks it might be the best ever season for schoolies)
The squire and snapper have been on especially with the incomming tides at green mud island and peel island in the morning with a few hours in to the tide.
The arrow squid and cuttlefish still in good numbers from east of the hyubers light to the northern tip of green island 23 to 30 ft mark of the bottom i am finding different colour jigs on different days so put out 3 and see wich one starts and then change them all,the cheap razorbacks are working well on the cuttlefish but one day its the blue and other days the red or orange.
Plenty of extra larhe whitiing at the amity banks but very few in numbers but most fish were 30 cm plus and the arrow squid were there as well.

Aug 07, 2019 4:47 pm

a few reports have come in a little late i have to say .. many big schoolies in the rainbow channel worth a troll or even floating a pillie or two while drifting with the tide there are still lots of little ones with a few big buggers in the basin on the amity bank side opposite the lazaret gutter.but not in the deep they are sitting in 14 to 16 ft depth.
Plenty of cuttlefish and arrow squid wide of the hyubers and east side of green in 28 to 30 ft depth at the low tide mark and some good sweetlip and squire of the reef at green ..a few nice squire also caught at harrys and some really nice fish of the captain neilson wreck.
the whiting have come back thick in the small boat channel and there are some monsters at the amity banks but not in any great numbers.

Aug 18, 2019 5:42 pm

What nice days the last 3 and no sign of the predicted 20 knots ,i listened and missed out on a couple of good looking evening fishing sessions ,never mind plenty of whiting in the chain banks side of the small boat passage and you cant stop these arrows and cuttlefish at the momment, some nice squire/snapper at the mt cotton reach in the rous channel today this area is producing quality snapper in the last few months so worth a try.
A few good mackerel in the rainbow and a few decent ones in the peel basin on the amity and the lazaret gutter side ,i had a short troll this morning going past the hope banks and snagged two small ones just under, they should not be far of comming back to the western side of the bay.just keep trolling on the way out and we will get a few soon.
green island has gone a little slow with only a few decent fish maybe the new moon will be better,a few days of wind comming up with small windows open to get out for a fish.

Aug 23, 2019 6:41 am

Looks like the winds are going to ease on the week end and all next week ,a few reports have come in ,some good schoolies in the rous channel especially in the shallows while catching whiting well worth having a pilly under a float only a couple of feet under the float.rainbow channel also holding some nice schoolies.
harrys and the mt cotton reach are producing really nice snapper at the momment and lazaret gutter as well .the whiting are growing in numbers all thru the chain banks and the rous channel and also at the entrance of the rous at the red and green markers.
and the cuttlefish and arrow squid are still in the deeper water from wellington point to st helena a drift in 25 to 30 ft is where they are at and orange colour is working the best at the momment just of the bottom.

Aug 29, 2019 5:43 pm

End of august and end of winter so warmer weather to get out on the bay a little earlier and fish a little later without freezing, whiting were back on in the last week in the small boat channel on the chain bank side and in big numbers and also in the further into the channel on the maroon bank side as well with a few nice big schoolies caught with floating pillies while whiting fishing.
the school mackerel have been hit and miss but a few reports from a couple of weeks ago and the last couple of days suggest in front of ormiston is where lots have been caught so worth a try along the drop off from hyubers south.
The squire and snapper season is good at the momment with some reports from fisherman sending me plenty of photos of their catches seb sent in a beauty from the mt cotton reach hole of quality fish and plenty of whiting in the tub as well a few nice squire and cod at green island.
The cuttlefish and arrow squid are still in good numbers and judging by the photos plenty are getting caught along with the arrow squid so some very happy fisherman with some tasty meals on the table, for the first time eaters of cuttlefish most people have given them the thumbs up with most saying they taste better then squid.
A few reports of a couple of whales in the bay on the week end past i went looking for them the last 3 days and found nothing ,seems a little early but they do move a long way hopefully in the next few weeks we see many of them in the bay.

Aug 31, 2019 6:51 am

Great few days the school mackerel have been all over but have congregated on the western side of the bay between the hyubers and raby bay you can troll of drift or anchor up with floating pillies they are in the thousands ,they are even between southern tip of green island and king island but smaller ones .

Sep 03, 2019 5:12 pm

The schoolies are still in the same area with plenty of small ones still ,so i decided to try the white and pink smith jigs to see if i could attract the bigger fish as last year and it worked still picked up a few small ones but definitely picked up the bigger fish, and the rous channel mt cotton reach is holding some lovely squire /snapper..and the whiting are there in the chain banks just need to have the tide running..

Report 31/5/19

Winter is finally upon us and i have to say not much fun these early morning starts when its 10 degrees but the fishing is very good, the school mackerel are on all over the bay. The basin at peel, the area around mud island at the yellow buoy the measured mile beacon and the four beacons are all holding school mackerel same as with the spoiled ground area north of harries artificial reef whether on the troll with spoons or a floating pilly you should be able to get a few.

The whiting are starting to show up in the small boat channel and the rous but best is fisherman’s gutter, amity banks, blue hole and the sand hills.

Squire seem to be in good numbers in the rous channel at the mt cotton reach, mud island, the lazaret gutter and green had some fish but most were undersized but some good sweet lip at least and a few good size Flathead.

Plenty of bonito all over the bay at the moment and a few long tail tuna in the northern bay, so when the winds ease it’s worth a trip out in the bay.

I thought i would mention as i have had a few emails re new bait board on my old boat so i thought i would pass on the info from the company as i have bought and made my own bait boards to fit the boats i have owned. It’s Formost Plastics at Lytton Road, Bulimba (3217 9177). They are very helpful people, fast service and very well priced. I only use food grade polypropylene, and find that 20-25mm thickness is the best. My last board lasted for 15 years.

Jun 02, 2019 2:55 pm

great first days of winter fishing the 20knots forcast did not arrive neither did the rain and the bay was like glass with plenty of fish to be had. martha and i spent the 3 days over peel way and there were plenty of bonito, school mackerel (early morning ) in the basin area east of the lazaret and they were in good numbers in the second green of amity banks. Still, the sharks are the biggest problem. You really cant anchor up and fish with a pilly as the sharks just will not let you get a bait down if there are schoolies around the sharks are there.

The amity banks had plenty of whiting, you needed to have a few different area drifts to find them but were of good quality.

the cuttlefish and arrow squid are in the deeper waters of the bay islands and i dont know whats happened to the tiger squid, they have gone very quiet.

Reef fishing was not much chop at the lazaret wind against tide and lots of undersize fish. Still, a great week end on the bay with amazing sunsets.

Jun 10, 2019 5:31 pm

Saturday had a few mackerel at the peel basin but lots of small ones as well today there were plenty at the 1st green at amity banks (west of it) with the run out tide managed 4 and a few bonito but also a few small ones.
the bay was like a milk pond and the cuttlefish and arrow squid are in good numbers east of wellington point all the way east of green and st helena just of the bottom but the tide has to be moving .
after 50 years of catching these cuttle fish and getting there extra dark ink everywhere i had a light bulb moment ,a 10 litre stainless steel pot ..it does not mark easy as anything to clean and you put the lid on and no mess on the boat…and most camping stores have them pretty chip and you can cook your crabs in them as well.
A few nice squire caught at green in the early morning run out tide on sunday as well.

Jun 15, 2019 3:16 pm

Great weather over the past few days and the fishing was fantastic ,the mackerel are in the thousands at peel island on the eastern side of the lazaret lots of small ones and lots of bonito till the run in the tide starts and then the big schoolies wake up and its on for young and old,did not pick up any all the way out so they seem to have moved into the bay ,the whiting are very slow with these tides at amity banks but seem to have come on in the small boat channel and the rous, and the squire /snapper are really starting to hit there straps with some nice fish at the mt cotton reach in the rous and also green, fished green and i was lucky to pick up some nice ones with the run in tide in the afternoon on small whole whiting.not my favourite tide but with the northerly and incoming tide it was lots of fun.

the cuttlefish and arrows are in good numbers in the 23 to 30 ft mark east of wellington point green and st helena ..just drift with a ball sinker on top of the jig drop to bottom and lift up a foot or so.

Jul 02, 2019 5:32 pm

july arrived and we managed a few days between the windy conditions and the rain, the big schoolies have moved into the rous channel still plenty of small ones at peel with plenty of bonito nothing showing up yet closer manly the hope banks and wide of the hyubers has been very slow.
the cuttlefish and arrow squid are plentiful in the 28 to 30 ft mark wide of green island and the squire are around the eastern side of green the rous channel mt cotton reach and some nice fish at harrys artificial.also hyubers light on the drop off back towards wellington point is producing fish as well.so all we need is the weather to ease so we can get out there again. There are plenty of sandies around green at the moment as well, it seems winter has not stopped them.

Jul 08, 2019 4:28 pm

First fine day and the school mackerel must have been starving with the high winds and rain ,they must have been waiting for the spoons because today they were back to the western side of the bay first couple were between green island and king island and then in front of the hyubers light there were hundreds. The only problem was there were 20 undersize to one big fish but when they are on like that just makes you sleep better at night. A couple of readers came past to say hi and some good schoolies in the half tide gutter and in the rous as well but again lots of small fish, but just think how good it will be come august, we wont know to catch schoolies or follow the whales… good problem to have. Some nice squire at harrys as well, and i stopped quickly for a few cuttlefish and there are still plenty around. i am trying the Jarvis Walker jigs with the prongs on the back {razorbacks} they come in sets of threes, the orange and red caught nothing but the blue was very successful because the cuttlefish grab the jig by the middle unlike the squid which take them from the back so worth a try.

Jul 10, 2019 4:08 pm

Another nice day on the bay little chilly in the morning with winds from south west but as soon as they dropped out it was like summer.the schoolies seemed to have gone from close in since the netting the other day(i have no problem with netting ) but might have spooked them plenty of bonito and sharks still.
the whiting at the moment at the junction of the rous and small boat passage are huge 40 fish today was 3 plus kilos of fillets and the arrow squid are very big in the deeper water wide of green and the cuttlefish have moved further into the bay towards wellington point out wide and the razorback blue colour i have to say is working well on the cuttlefish.

Jul 15, 2019 5:09 pm

It was a bit chilly going out to Scarborough reef early this morning. It didn’t take long before a nice 55cm snapper got me fully awake. After a few breams and a couple of unwanted wobbegong (wish I could have been the weight of snappers!) the wind came up quickly. I certainly made it uncomfortable heading home.

Jul 17, 2019 6:12 pm

school mackerel have gone a little quiet as have the whiting but when you find the whiting they are very large fish nearly all large ones are females full of roe ,we caught some monsters today and last week in the rous channel and today at amity banks, the arrow squid and cuttle fish are in good numbers wide of green island, stanu are you sure they were tiger squid and not arrows? as i have not seen one tiger squid in the deep water ? plenty of bonito towards peel island .and was great to see couple of netters getting rid of a few hundred sharks we might be able to anchor up and catch some schoolies instead of shark after shark

Jul 18, 2019 1:25 pm

Some good reports of lots of whiting at the sandhills the last few days and the snapper and squire are been caught in the rous and Harry’s as well Cowan and the close islands might have to rug up and have an early morning and evening fish.

Report 7/4/19

the weather has finally settled and if we go on previous years the fishing should continue as good as it has been all year, the weather on the week end was fantastic with lots of boats out and the southern bay produced plenty of excellent size whiting on the legal side of amity banks and in the small boat passage and the rous, lots of boats saying hard to get but remember these small tides there is not much run for a long time so as the tide slows so does the bite, you need too give the boat a push or cast and retrieve slowly rather then waiting for the drift ,to make the whiting chase.

The school mackerel are starting to increase in size and closer in plenty around the hope banks and plenty on the north eastern side of the chain banks on harries artificial side ,tuna schools were working on the week end and some nice ones caught ,sometimes it took one cast and other time 100 thats tuna fishing in the bay,34 gm chrome slugs work the best ,lets hope the spotty numbers increase over the next few weeks as i dont think 3 from last week constitute them being in the bay..we can only hope but not holding my breath.

Reef fishing was a little slow with plenty of small bull sharks and cat fish flushed out of the rivers and making a mess of the baits while fishing for reef fish in the shallow reefs,if you are getting big hits and not hooking up its not you its the cat fish.

Apr 09, 2019 6:56 pm

Nice couple of days a little breezy this afternoon but nice and calm early in the morning not my favourite tide for squire fishing but tide and wind in the same direction made it a little easier managed one nice squire and dropped a couple ,thats what happens when you go in to put the kettle on,it was also the perfect time to see if the squid were back at green and the with an incomming tide and a northerly i could take the boat in 3 ft of water and drift in the direction without worrying about getting stuck in the shallows(which has happened ) and there were plenty of squid schools in groups of 4 to 6 a little spooky in the real shallow water but aggresive as you dropped in the deeper water.lots of fun and did not get inked which was good news.
A little work on the old girl in the next few days as it looks like a little breezy.
Plenty of big theadfin in the mouth of the brisbane river on whole live herring and the whiting have started to improve a little in the small boat channel but only in small pockets but still in good numbers and quality on the legal size of the amity banks, with plenty of squid swimming around.

Apr 17, 2019 5:52 pm

Thats good news regarding spottys, hope the winds ease so we can get up there from the southern bay, managed a couple of hours today as i wanted to fish the outgoing tide with the south westerly got 5 nice fish sweetlip a squire and a big bream at green island but the south westerly went to southerly and it became not very comfortable at all..at least got the boat out for a run..maybe winds will ease early next week lets hope so.

Apr 26, 2019 5:43 pm

Nice days on the bay with winds easing completely on friday afternoon, plenty of fish around with lots of schoolies on the western side of the hope banks and a couple of km in front of the huybers light with the outgoing tide in the mornings but small sharks were a real problem ,i anchored up thinking we would catch some schoolies on pillies and hooked 7 sharks in a row so it was back to trolling, there were plenty at the spoiled ground north of harries artificial reef and some nice squire on the bottom as well.a friend reported lots of bonito at shark spit .
The tiger squid were plentiful at the amity banks and at green island and the whiting at the amity banks were good quality but the quantity was not great wind against tide with very small tides does not help.but managed plenty for a good feed.
A few boats came past to let us know plenty of whiting opposite the fishermans gutter entrance.

May 04, 2019 8:27 am

Whiting have slowed down quiet a bit over the last month but reading past few years reports its normal this time of year and as mentioned
enough for a good feed and very good quality we managed a couple of dozen at the amity banks entering from the rous side and there were plenty of big squid in the same area, the schoolies were a little slow in the morning but picked up a couple with the outgoing tide on the way home, some nice sweetlip and big flathead on the eastern side of green island and i think it might be time to start looking for some cuttlefish as its about the time they start showing up in the deeper water.

May 07, 2019 6:06 pm

Great few days on the bay lots of boats out on labour day but not many out today, the fishing was great depending on what you wanted for dinner, the school mackerel were on yesterday afternoon and this morning they were big buggers early morning start of incomming tide as the sun came up,but you had to fight of the bonito as there were plenty of them around they were hitiing in doubles but managed 5 nice bif schoolies but not around the hope banks closer in between the hyubers and the deep trench before the shallow hope banks.

the squire and sweetlip were ok but lots of bream cleaning the baits in a hurry but managed some nice fish.

The sharks have become a problem lost one diving board and got the other to see the tooth marks on ,the other day i anchored up to get some schoolies and there were up to half a dozen sharks eating all the burly and the pillies.

the whiting are not thick in the rous and small boat passage or amity banks but if you put the time in you can get a couple of dozen good quality fish, and the benefit is the big tiger squid hanging around.

The squid were very skitish at green today had 4 come up for a look but no takers and the cuttlefish in the deeper water wide of green were not thick i put in half hour for two small ones as the temp drops they should get better.

Report 2/2/19

January has come and gone, and apart from a 6 inch spotty i have seen nothing inside the bay which is quite disappointing. The water temp has gone to 82 and the water colour was disgusting with the big tides. As i write this the south easterly has finally come through and a little wetness, cant call it rain yet. Let’s hope the water stays clear and there is a small drop in the water temp. The spottys have been caught outside so they are around, just need a trigger to come into the bay.

Even the schoolies had gone for quite for a while but they came on the bite again last week. Interesting with the big tides they were over on the western side of moreton island from the sand hills all the way up to Lucinda bay. They like clean water as well, but I managed to catch a few back in close this week.

The tiger squid have started and the whiting (thank heavens) are in plentiful supply throughout the bay. The reef fishing has been very good as well, with harrys fishing well for squire and snapper, as have been the shallow reefs around the bay islands with lots of sweetlip and squire around.

My good friend Doctor Land made his dream come true fishing for threadfin at the mouth of the Brisbane river, and by the size of the fish how could you not be excited? Over 110 cm is a fantastic catch, and he caught 4 so a good session. I was told by one of the pro fisherman thread fin have been pretty thick in the last few weeks around the area, so if you want to get a few live herring or large green prawns are the go.

Lets hope our next report says the spotties are in.

Feb 07, 2019 5:00 pm

Everyone waiting for the winds to ease so we can get out for a fish and judging by the bom and see breeze i cant tell if i am arthur or martha.bom says 20 plus knots predicted for sunday and see breeze showing 2 knots and dead calm conditions. i would suggest we all wait till late tommorow to see if any can agree or we just wait till sunday morning before deciding..

Feb 09, 2019 6:42 pm

Dead calm on the bay this morning till late in the arvo blowing close to 20 knots around 5 pm.plenty of whiting southern side of small boat channel and some nice tiger squid in the deeper weed banks.there are lots of tigers on the weed banks at Cowan reef close to shore all the way up every weed bank seems to have big tigers.plenty of bait everywhere no sign of spotties .managed two babies again today.a friend just told me this arfternoon lots of toad fish schools in the half tide gutter just before the maroom banks and balls of bait with tailor feeding

Feb 12, 2019 7:59 am

Might be a good idea when you get a chance to have a fish on the eastern side of green close to the drop off all along as the sweetlip are in large numbers and very good quality fish and wonderful eating as well ,couple of our friends that follow our reports sent me these wonderful photos ryann and brett ,thank you for letting me know ,i have to say have not seen this many sweetlip in the bay for a long time but no complaining from me its great to see the close islands full of fish.

Feb 19, 2019 3:33 pm

Well i suppose one good day is better then none ,beautiful day on the bay today a little s/w this morning and then glass till the n/e kicked in.plenty of whiting on the southern side of the chain banks with plenty biting when there was run in the tide as slack water hit it was like they all stopped eating tide turned and they were back on,picked up a couple of nice schoolies on the way out between king island and green island very close in and we caught 12 all undersize around the hope banks going out but another nice fish on the way home,we stopped at green for a few hours with the outgoing tide and managed 2 nice squire around the 40 mark but there were lots of horrible ocean toad fish

Feb 25, 2019 6:00 am

Wow no fishing for a week, i had to resort to catching bream in the marina, pretty desperate thing to do but it brought back lots of memories from my young days fishing the rock walls and marinas in victoria growing up,and before that in greece. let’s hope this horrible weather clears sometime soon as its getting a little frustrating.

the fishing, apart from reef and whiting fishing, might slow down with the colour of the water in the bay. it’s poo brown and with the winds still blowing the school mackerel are going to be hard to catch. and as for the spotties, i can’t see them coming in with this coloured water. i hope we have not lost the season for them, time will tell when we can get out there to have a look, let’s hope it’s by the end of the week.

Feb 28, 2019 7:24 am

Well managed a couple of hours out yesterday morning till it started to howl around lunchtime,to my surprise the water was quite clean and a good colour ,managed a nice squire and a nice cod at green island with the run out tide dropped a couple of squire as well so for a couple of hours it was fun, decided on a troll as the tide changed and there were lots of 30 cm schoolies but not one over 50 .looks like shitty weather again for a few days ,and i hate to say we might have missed out on the spotty season but lets hope they make a late run as the water temp has dropped to 76 …we will see when we get a few nice days.

Mar 06, 2019 4:11 pm

well the water temp has dropped but finally a day to go fishing, some nice schoolies on the south western side of the hope banks on the way out to the whiting grounds this morning , plenty to be had at the small boat channel and a few squid to make our day complete, whiting master and my godson had lots of fun.but the catch of the day good friend shane and peter cleaned up in the rainbow channel with lots and lots of squid they were black all over, and they were climbing over each other to get to the jigs, shanes reckons green striped pattern worked the best.lots of tina schools wide of the sandhills but no reports of mackerel still hoping..looks like saturday sunday might be nice out in the bay lets hope bom is correct.

Mar 08, 2019 7:50 am

Well the weather seems to be a little more settled and the forcast for the week end looks good, plenty of whiting in the small boat passage and all the way along the maroon bank (just make sure not to close to the 2 mt green zone) but plenty there ,the water is really clear so the school mackerel should be on the lee side s of the hope banks depending on the tide flow ,as seen plenty of squid in the rainbow channel along the weed banks and a few nice reef fish at the shallow bareefs of the islands and some nice fish at harries artificial ,lots of tuna schools breaking up the surface on the western side of moreton island a few were caught with chrome slugs but it took lots of casts to get one to hit, and i have to say if the spotties have any chance of comming in this will be the time or time will run out for the year but with the temperature on the rise after the south easterlys we might be lucky

Mar 10, 2019 6:16 pm

Nice week end on the bay sat and especially sunday with thousands of boats out,the tiger squid have come in the bay with a bang hundreds in the rainbow channel all the way from amity to dunwich every weed bank and even in the deeper water but around the welsby light was the best spot,i stayed over night on the maroon bank side of the small boat passage and the big tigers came on with a bang around 4 pm stopped and then an hour later back on again ,i think the schools are going up and down so when they see the jigs its first in best dressed as they were climbing over each other to get the jig ,and i was anchored up,and this morning same thing on sunrise on again.
I also tried green today to see if they have come that far in got 3 small ones and did not see any more so i dont know if the big numbers have come all the way in ,it will not be long i dont think before green and all the close in areas fire up.
The whiting were again in good numbers on the southern side of the chain banks and up along the maroon banks all the way up to where the rous joins in lots of boats filling there buckets.
The school mackerel were hit and miss and were even on the opposite side with the incomming tide,it seem they are hanging around the north western corner just west of the green marker which shows the beginning of the chain banks.
Lots of tuna schools wide of the sand hills and wide of tangalooma and thru out the shipping channels ,the spotties are been caught outside but have not seen any yet in the bay still hoping for a miracle to happen ,i am hoping this heat this week could be a trigger,we have caught them in the past all the way thru till easter.
Some nice reef fish and some good size schoolies this week at harries ,so lets hope the weather is good to us later in the week for a day out.

Mar 19, 2019 2:55 pm

Beautiful day on the bay a few nice reef fish with the outgoing at green island till the toothie critters turned up,but plenty of good size schoolies with the run out tide on the north eastern side of the hope banks.worth putting on a smith jig in white .as 3 out of the 7 were on them..the water turned dirty brown with the big tide but the mackerel did not seem to mind.

Mar 24, 2019 1:12 pm

What a great weekend weather wise apart from saturday arvo when the predicted 10 to 15 turned into 20 plus knot from the north which caught some of us out,bom did change the forcast at 8.30 pm a little late for those out to spend the night, hope everyone survived the rockin and rolling,on the fishing front and with all the boat traffic the fishing was pretty good,a few schoolies around the hope bank beacons and a few were caught in the southern bay south of bird and goat island, but overall pretty quiet, the whiting in the rous small boat passage and on the southern side of chain banks was ok but nowhere near the numbers they have been ,i went over to the amity banks towards the oyster leases and could not get a bite till the tide started to roll in and it was like the dinner bell went and excellent quality fish as well.
The tiger squid are really in abundance in the rainbow channel towards the welsby light and plenty on the northern side of the maroon banks in the weed banks.green island has plenty but very timid at the moment .
A few reef fish especially cod for some reason but only a few sweetlip and squire were size most were on the limit or just under, they will grow up soon.
If you like prawning and can throw a cast net lots of them in the logan river mouth

Mar 26, 2019 5:39 pm

What a fantastic day on the bay tuesday apart from the northerly swell running early in the morning turned into a dead calm day ,the good news is we picked up two very large spotties today first ones for the season both big females and lots of big schoolies so might be a last hoorah tha next fine weather to get the slugs out and have a look for some spotties in the bay .
the whiting were a very large size at the amity banks and the squid againd were good in the rous except a little bugger got me good in the face, ron the whiting master and dave and i had one of the best days fishing

Report 4/1/19

The year is off to a good start plenty of whiting all over the bay from the close banks at the small boat channel to the rous mostly in the shallower water to the south and amity banks on the legal side as well ,plenty of whiting getting caught at the go slow yellow in front of the
big sand hill as well.

The school mackerel are just no leaving the bay anymore so trolling with boards and spoons will get you a fish especially with the smaller tides around the hope banks ,around the north side of peel and also on the eastern side of peel at the moment towards dunwich, plenty caught as well on the green opposite the lazaret gutter at peel, lee side of the banks seems to be where they are holding in most areas.

The squire and sweet lip are also in good numbers around peel island and green island and the deeper water around st Helena id=s producing nice fish mud island has also been producing nice fish, hole in the wall had some nice fish last week especially with the outgoing tide.

Still waiting for the spotties to come into the bay i did hear of some in the northern bay last week but after going for a look for a couple of days i did not see any ,but i did not go to far north, looking at the last few ears reports they were in this time last year and with the water temp and the amount of bait in the bay it wont be long if they are not already in,a friend scooped up a nice feed of whitebait at the sand hills last Thursday night ,again same time as last year.

so enjoy the fishing and hopefully we will be getting a few spotties as this report is on line.

on a serious note be careful with the kids this time of year as the stone fish float around the bay and just look like some weed.

not a bad few days ,school mackerel very quiet, only a couple of small ones in the basin at peel but huge whiting on the banks towards the oyster leases. There are some nice snapper at green but a reader sent me a photo of just the head after sharks took the whole body, sad to see a beautiful fish go to waste. i have never seen or had a shark take a fish at green which is a little concerning. There’s still no sign of spotties, waiting waiting maybe after these south easters

Nice day out on the bay the whiting were in big numbers in the small boat channel half way towards the floating yellow on the drop of to the banks and the tiger squid were very hungry chasing the whiting being pulled into the boat and big buggers,so they are in, all we want know is the bloody spotties to pull there finger out and come in there is plenty of bait in the bay, schoolies were hard to find today managed two 6 inch ones {babies} on the southern side of hope banks and picked a 60cm one between green and king island on way home.

The last few days were nice in the bay except for the afternoon blows especially on saturday arvo when the 10 to 15 went to 15 to 20 plus.
lots of boat were caught unaware of the 20 plus forcast change me being one of them and i have to say one of the roughest trips comming back from the rous channel in many many years,i see a boat went under thank heavens the folks were saved but the boat sunk,it was seriously quiet rough conditions, had a very sea sick wife and happy to have come home with boat and wife intact.
The school mackerel were very quite and looking at the big tides and dirty water i can see why,the spottys still not in lets hope they get in fast all signs are there for them to come in the bait is in the bonito have come in mutton birds are in and waiting and there is tons of whitebait and froggys so i hope its just a matter of time.
The shallows reefs fished well for squire and sweetlip and with the wind up a few boats caught some nice reef fish on both ends of horseshoe bay hole in the wall and the rubble on the western end.
plenty of good whiting in the small boat channel and eastern side of amity banks and the tiger squid have arrived in the deeper weed bank in the rous and small boat channel ,i would be looking for them closer in when the water clarity happens around green island

i could say the spotties are in but i cant, but have never seen one this size in the bay .6 inches long…the good news is the schoolies are back around the hope banks and if you want to go further also shark spit and lucinda bay, the whiting were in the southern side of the chain banks as well today but not to comfortable a little sloppy.
